Shirley Ann Gardner Clay, 89, of Richmond VA, passed away on October 13, 2025. She was the only child of Reuel and Katherine Gardner but was blessed to have raised a large family with her husband Sonny, whom she married later in life. Shirley was immensely proud of her two sons, David and Russell, and delighted in having 31 grand and great grandchildren.
Shirley spent years as a magistrate and with the Greene County Record newspaper. She enjoyed being a member of Moose International and spending time with her family and friends, including her treasured canine companion, Winnie.
Shirley is lovingly remembered by her beloved son Russell A. Batten (Michelle), her grandchildren Yvonne (Jason), Lynette, Nikk i(Justin), Rusty, Jessica (Will), Jason, Ryan (Christian), Kenny, Courtney (Daniel), Briana, Corey, Codey (Brieana), and her 19 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her dear husband Sonny H. Clay, her beloved son Raymond D. Batten, her beautiful great granddaughter Rebecca Aronson, and a sweet daughter who was born sleeping. As we mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing that they are rejoicing in their reunion.
