Robert Andrew "Randy" Vasold

Robert Andrew “Randy” Vasold had a life of many complexities. Born in Lynchburg, VA in 1947, the red-haired, feisty son of Helen “Shirley” Thompson Vasold and Robert Alton “Andy” Vasold, Randy sought to live life differently than many would expect.

After completing high school (George Washington High, Danville, VA), Randy joined the US Navy and proudly served his country. Upon return to the US (and only to prove his father wrong!), he enrolled at Averett University, where he studied business. He worked for most of his life as a lumber grader at various sawmills around central Virginia, but was most at home among people, places and things that showed possibility. An avid collector of china and punch bowls, this rugged man embraced beauty and fine detail. Later on in life, he and his love, Terry Wells Vasold, scoured auctions, yard sales and other places where one mans trash could become their treasure. Their antique store, Friendly Reminders, closed in the early 2000’s after the sudden and unexpected death of “his sweet one”, Terry.

Randy was the proud father of two adopted children, Tara Vasold Fischer and Jared Vasold, who he loved as his own, and two biological sons, Jessee Vasold and Joseph Vasold. His four kids were homeschooled by Randy and Terry and lived much of their lives in homesteading-like adventures, with constant encouragement to learn all they could to carve out an educated future for themselves. His absolute pride in them, and his seven grandsons (Lucius Fischer; Thaddeus, Remington, Paxton and Quintus Vasold; and Dawson and Kai Vasold) shone through.

Randy was complex. Both crotchety and a charmer. Serious, yet witty. A wise steward and an investor. Humble yet proud. His faith and his family were his lifeline through an especially challenging set of life experiences, but his spirit was always strong.

Randy resided in beautiful Lousia, VA after living all over the Piedmont region. He died peacefully in the VCU Critical Care Burn Unit in Richmond, VA. As he took his last beautiful breaths he was surrounded by his family, enveloped in love.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, his younger sister (Carol Vasold Sparks), and his wife. He is survived by his children, his children-in-law (Keith Fischer; Sarah Boxley; and Jamie Vasold), his grandsons, his favorite cousin (Maryanne Yergovich), his former foster child, and numerous friends, family and caretakers that loved and supported his experiences in life.

A graveside service to honor his legacy will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 11:00 am at Fort Hill Memorial Park (Section 9) in Lynchburg, VA. Funeral arrangements made by Sheridan Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Trevilians Volunteer Fire Department (637 Firehouse Dr., Louisa, VA 23093).
