Marion Martin

Deaconess Marion Isabel Martin, 98, of Palmyra, Virginia departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. She was born on August 26, 1927, in Palmyra, Virginia to the late Miles and Susan Jackson.

Marion joined Evergreen Baptist Church in Palmyra, Virginia at an early age. Later moved her membership to Shiloh Baptist Church in Waynesboro, Virginia and continued to serve there as a Deaconess under the leadership of Reverend Dawkins. Marion and her husband left Virginia in 1949 and moved their family to Newark, New Jersey where they worked for and retired from Hoffman La Roche.

Marion was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years Samuel L. Martin Sr.; two sons Samuel Martin II and Kenneth Ray Martin, three brothers Miles Jackson, Jr., Louis Jackson and Samuel Jackson; two sisters Sally Elnora Bland and Rosetta Hawthorne.

Marion leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters Joyce Bailey Palmyra, VA and Linda Freeman Newark, NJ, two sons Anthony Martin Palmyra, VA and an adopted son Charles Smith of New York, 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 8 great great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special friends Delores Washington and Rev. Dr. Warne Dawkins, whom she loved as a son. Marion will always be remembered for her soft-spoken voice, love of family and friends and love of God.

A visitation will be held between 12:00-1:00pm on Saturday, September 6th with a Funeral service to follow at 1:00pm, both services to take place at Lake Christian Church, 733 South Boston Road, Palmyra, Virginia. Interment will take place at the Martin Family Cemetery, Martin Lane, Palmyra, Virginia.
