KENNETH LEON BLACK III

Kenneth Leon Black lll, 79, of Goochland, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2023, at home surrounded by his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife Deb, his brother Bill, sister-in-law Bruce, and other extended family members. Ken is preceded in death by both his father and mother.

Born on August 8, 1944, Ken was the eldest son of Kenneth and Dorothy Black.  Although born in Richmond, Va, Ken spent the first 19 years of his life in Baltimore.  As a youngster Ken played baseball and the drums.  Growing up in the 50’s he listened to a lot of music. His love for music lasted throughout his life. In addition, he was an avid Baltimore Colts and Baltimore Orioles fan.

In 1963, the family returned to Richmond.  Ken worked several jobs and eventually went back to school. He was attending VCU in 1971, when he met his soul mate -Deb. A year later they married. Not long after tying the knot, Ken decided he wanted an MBA. Virginia Tech welcomed him into its program.

Ken worked in health care, enjoyed photography, and read thrillers.  Unable to have children, the couple grew very close. With no interest in traveling, they made their home their sanctuary. Three parakeets and three dogs have shared their lives with the Blacks. Most weekends the couple could be found working in their yard. They replaced the Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Orioles with VT football, VCU basketball, and riding their “hogs.”

The Blacks lived in Richmond, then Henrico, and finally in Goochland.  In 2009 they stepped over the threshold of Gum Spring United Methodist Church, and they knew they were home. Our extended church family has been a source of strength and comfort throughout Ken’s journey. We will be eternally grateful for all the support and love showered upon us.

A special thanks to Kevin Angone of Three Pillars Senior Home Care, who for almost 2 years, enabled Ken to be cared for at home.  Last but not least, we wish to thank Legacy Hospice which made Ken’s end of days as comfortable as possible.

A worship service honoring Ken’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M., December 2, at Gum Spring United Methodist Church located at 191 Cross County Road, Gum Spring, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gum Spring United Methodist Church “Food Pantry” or to the Goochland Animal Shelter in Ken’s name would be welcomed.

Norman Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
