John McLaughlin

Johnny McLaughlin would have described himself as evidence of God’s grace. He will be remembered by his family as being strong, generous, fearless, and charismatic. However, instead of taking credit for his gifts, he would give all honor and glory to God, though this wasn’t always the case. Johnny, being the fighter that he was, tried his best to figure life out on his own, before ultimately accepting the embrace of his Heavenly Father.

Since his childhood, Johnny was gifted relationally; strong and smart. Which made him successful in most things he tried. He was a accomplished athlete and student, graduating from Freeman High School and University of Richmond. He started his own business, Custom Brick and Stone in 1989, which grew into a staple in the community for excellent work and philanthropic support. He built a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Karen, of 36 years — a family that would grow to include seven children and 22 grandchildren. And yet, despite all his hard work and success, he would be the first to say that it was in failure - not success - that he came to recognize his desperate need for Jesus.

When Johnny was in high school, God sowed a seed of faith in his heart through the ministry of Young Life. And while that seed took root when he was 16, it wasn’t until many years later that he recognized how much he needed the love, grace and forgiveness that could only come from Jesus. And with that revelation, Johnny became a beacon of light to his family and community. Johnny and Karen’s willingness to house a friend in need or host droves of high school students for a Young Life club made their home synonymous with generosity and hospitality. Johnny’s joy was contagious, and his laughter lifted the room. His love for young people was evident not only through his own children, but the countless others he coached, encouraged and mentored through youth sports, Young Life, and the outdoors.

Johnny was a patriarch in every sense of the word. He led his own family in spiritual strength and faithfulness. He built a business that continues to bless the community. And he was an example for anyone who saw him clapping on the sidelines or heard his hearty “Amen” in church or anyone who has felt the warmth of a Johnny McLaughlin hug.

And while Johnny was influential to so many, his most fond moments were simple ones: sitting on the porch in Topsail with Karen, fishing with his boys, late nights of ice cream and laughter with his girls, blessing the food before a meal with his family.

Johnny lived fully, loved deeply, and pointed others to grace. Those who knew him will be inspired to do the same.

Johnny McLaughlin was born on May 27, 1960, to John and Elizabeth. He went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 2nd at the age of 65. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen and his 7 children: Kristin, Jennifer, Adrienne, Courtney, Will, Lee and Jess (as well as 22 grandchildren). He is preceded in death by John and Elizabeth. A celebration of life will be held on July 13th at 2pm at Salem Baptist Church (465 Broad St Rd, Manakin Sabot).
