John Stephen Ellwood

John Stephen Ellwood peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus on February 25, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born on January 14, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Richard J. and Mary Ellwood,

John wore as many hats as he collected. He was a devoted husband to Becky Ellwood, proud father to Brittany (Sean) Brennan, Carrie (Charlie) Chandler, Joshua (Karly) Ellwood, Kaitlin Ellwood (Luke Hintz) and loving and cherished Poppy to Avery, Marylou, Georgia, James and Austyn. He was a loving brother, loyal friend, lifelong police officer, and United States Marine proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War. He dedicated twenty-five years to the Baltimore City Police Department, and sixteen years to the Wintergreen Police Department, serving his community with integrity, strength, and commitment.

His personality was one of a kind - always smiling, trying to crack a joke, and making others laugh. He never passed the chance to play any sport involving a ball. The role he cherished most was Dad. His greatest accomplishment was his four children. From the moment of their births when he proudly wore the four buttons, “It’s a Girl, It’s a Girl, It’s a Girl, It’s a Boy” and passed out pink and blue cigars, to every moment of their lives, he was there. He was their protector, encourager, biggest fan, and best friend.

He loved seeing them marry the loves of their lives and have children. He was the best Poppy. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his children and grandchildren. John’s family was his greatest pride and joy, and his legacy will live on through them.

John is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren; brothers Richard Ellwood and Robert Ellwood; sister Mary Ellen (Ellwood) Mitchell, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Kathleen (Ellwood) Harker and sister Elizabeth (Betsy) Ellwood.

A private family service will be held Sunday, March 8 at Sheridan Funeral Home, 4626 Cedar Lane Road, Kents Store, VA 23084. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, t2t.org, an organization he supported and would be honored to have received donations in his name.
