Irene T. Newton, born on April 5, 1925, peacefully passed away on December 22, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Troy, Virginia, surrounded by love and cherished memories.
Irene was welcomed into eternity by her loving parents, Walter P. and Laura T. Thurston, her brothers, Walter and Carl Thurston, her devoted husband, Joseph M. Newton, her son, Donald Newton, and her great-grandson, Caleb Marion.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Joseph M. Newton Jr. (Sarah), Curtis H. Newton (Linda), and her beloved daughter, Juanita N. Steere (Jim). Irene was a proud grandmother to Dana Schmidt (Paul), Sherri Pendleton (Jerry), Joey Newton, Shelley Lermack (Brian), Brooke Miller (Nick), Amy Newton (Ian), Chris Marion (Brandy), Colby Steere (Jenn), Laura Miller (Brent), and Brandon Newton (Heather). Her heart swelled with joy for her great-grandchildren: Brittney Glenn (fiancé Chris), Alyssa Curry, Ben Schmidt, Zach Newton, Sydney Newton, Keegan Miller, Lukas Miller, Connor Marion, Lilah Miller, Cody Marion, Tyler Newton, and Elliot Newton.
Irene’s remarkable career spanned over 40 years as a dedicated dental assistant, followed by a fulfilling role as an optometrist assistant until her retirement at the age of 93. She was committed to her community, serving on the Town Council of Columbia and contributing to the Fluvanna Historical Society. Her musical talents shone as the organist for Memorial Baptist Church, a place where her faith flourished. Irene was also an active and enthusiastic member of the Red Hat Society, the Golden Hat Society, and the Golden Oldies Group, where she made enduring friendships.
A vibrant spirit, Irene found joy in the simple pleasures of life, from watching Hallmark movies to cheering on her family during their sporting events. She loved engaging with her community and never missed a graduation, always looking forward to celebrating her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's achievements.
Irene was an avid walker, completing ten Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10Ks in Richmond, proving her unwavering commitment to health and vitality well into her later years.
