Howard Franklin Simmons, born April 22, 1928, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mary Lizzy Ranson Simmons and Clarence Burnette Simmons, as well as all six of his siblings and his cherished dogs Mollie, Mason, and Lucy.
Howard’s life was a testament to kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 55 years, E. Maxine Simmons; his daughter, Dawn Dotson; his son-in-law, Jayfred Dotson; his dear brother-in-law, Raye Respress; and his faithful companion, Lady, his beloved napping dog.
A proud veteran, Howard served honorably in the United States Army Infantry from 1948 to 1951. Stationed with the 4th Regimental Combat Team in Fairbanks, Alaska, he endured extreme conditions on ski patrol and carried his service with pride.
For over four decades, Howard built a remarkable career at AT&T, advancing from Lineman to Building Operations Manager until his retirement in 1990. Beyond his professional achievements, his heart shone brightest through his decades of volunteerism. From 1976 to 2019, he gave selflessly to Habitat for Humanity, the Warrenton Women’s Shelter, and various ministries at Warrenton Baptist Church and later Gum Spring United Methodist. Howard’s spirit of service touched many through roles such as deacon, jailhouse ministry volunteer, woodcutter, and participant in the Warrenton Christmas Mother and Toys for Tots programs.
Howard was also deeply connected to his community through longtime membership in the Warrenton and Goochland Lions Clubs and the American Legion, as well as his involvement with the Masons.
A lifelong deer hunter and member of the Colonial Flat Iron Hunt Club, Howard’s exuberance for life was infectious. He delighted friends and family with stories, jokes, and a smile that brightened every room. He enjoyed softball, square dancing, gardening, and small engine repair, always ready to lend a hand or an ear to anyone in need. His enthusiasm extended to simple pleasures like blowing leaves and cutting grass, acts of kindness for neighbors and friends alike.
Howard’s legacy is one of warmth, dedication, and unwavering joy. Though a private memorial will be held at a later date, those wishing to honor his memory are invited to make donations to Goochland Pet Lover’s, P.O. Box 27, Oilville, VA 23129, in lieu of flowers.
His presence and spirit will be deeply missed, but his kindness and love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
