Edward Bender Powell, 95, of Palmyra, passed away on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, after a long and eventful life.
He was born on June 30th, 1930, in Fluvanna County, the son of the late Leander Curtis Powell and Vera Virginia Yancey. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters, Virginia “Louise” Powell, Myrtle L. Harlow, Eleanor “Pauline” Deane, Mary Belle White, and Dorothy “Dot” Meadows; brothers, Weldon C. Powell, Harry G. Powell, Malcom S. Powell, Charles M. Powell and Claude S. Powell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 27 years Mabel Powell and his daughter Teresa P. Shifflett.
Edward is survived by his son Robert Powell and wife, Rena and grandson Neil Powell and wife Meredith; his son-in-law Vernon Linwood Shifflett, grandson Caleb Shifflett and wife Karmen and granddaughter Courtney Lukowicz and husband Cameron; great grandchildren Larkin and Kellen Powell, Maddie Lukowicz and Olivia Shifflett; and a host of nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Edward served his country in the U.S. Air Force and Virginia Air National Guard. He retired after many years on the road, driving an Oil Tanker for Charlottesville Oil.
Edward's love of the outdoors, fishing and hunting, especially turkey hunting is well known to everyone is Fluvanna County.
The family will receive friends on June 2nd from 6:00-8:00pm at Sheridan Funeral Home in Kent’s Store. There will be a graveside service at 11:00am on June 3rd at Salem United Methodist Church in Troy, Virginia.
The family would also like to thank The Laurels of Charlottesville for the care and respect that added years to his life and the Hospice of the Piedmont.
