Bryan Edward Layne

Bryan Edward Layne, known as “Ed,” passed away on August 22, 2026, in Henrico, VA at the age of 86. Ed was born July 19, 1940 at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, VA. He grew up in Powhatan and played football, baseball and basketball at Powhatan High School, and his nickname there was ”jughead.” Ed earned a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia, where he played football and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He then became an Army First Lieutenant officer in charge of Armor Training at Fort Knox, KY, where he received a Commendation Medal. From there, he was appointed to the FBI as a Special Agent with assignments at high security levels in and around New York City. Ed then went on to hold positions in banking and acquiring agricultural business in Virginia, retiring after 40 years in management of agricultural companies.

Ed served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Chapter of Arthritis Foundation for years and helped establish the James P. Mills Chapter of Arthritis Foundation in Middleburg. He was an avid tennis player at Chestnut Forks Tennis Club in Warrenton, VA, as well as a Sporting Clays Champion in tournaments up and down the East Coast. Ed was a member of First Baptist Church in Hopewell, and was active in the Prince George Ruritan Club.

He is predeceased by his parents James Bryan Layne and Florence Archer Guthrie Layne of Crozier, VA, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Ed is survived by his wife of 60 years: Sharron Cross Layne, daughter Elizabeth Archer Layne, Byrd Davenport, III, and many cousins in VA, NC, and AZ.

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, a service for Ed will be held at Norman Funeral Home, 2982 River Rd. W., Goochland, VA, 23063, opening at 10am with an 11am ceremony. Donations in the name of Edward Layne toward fighting Parkinson’s disease at any of the following are appreciated: The Parkinson's Foundation at The Parkinson's Foundation, Michael J.
