Brenda Brooks Purcell

Brenda Brooks Purcell, 75, of Louisa died Thursday, July 4, 2024, after a second battle with breast cancer. She passed away at her home surrounded by family and friends.

Brenda was born on January 20, 1949, in Louisa and grew up at Post Oak in Spotsylvania County. She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Jackson Brooks; her mother, Margaret Williams Brooks; and her brother, Norman Brooks, Sr. (also known as Bug).

Brenda is survived by her husband, Richard “Dicky” Purcell; her daughters, Beth Purcell Brown (Winston), Penny Purcell (William), and Tammy Purcell (Vincent); her brothers, Daniel Brooks and Jeff Brooks; her grandchildren, Jordan Atwell Purcell, Jonah Brown, Peter Lomong, and Alexander Lomong; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Brenda was a committed wife, mother, and grandmother, who dedicated her life to caring for others. She could often be found at Little League baseball games supporting her husband, Dicky.

She adored her grandchildren, who called her “Crazy Grandma” because of her silly and joyous energy. Whether they were running track, riding horses, playing baseball or volleyball, “Crazy” was her grandkids’ biggest fan.

A woman of many talents, Brenda was an avid runner, gardener, crafter, and cook. She enjoyed running along the river in Fredericksburg and at local parks. She grew tomatoes every year and believed the mark of a good gardener was getting a ripe one by the Fourth of July. She cooked fresh vegetables, casseroles, and pies for every family gathering. She was a talented quilter, embroiderer, and sewer, who blessed those around her with handmade gifts.

A lifelong animal lover, Brenda rescued dogs, loved to feed and watch the birds, and travelled to see wildlife at national parks near and far.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 12 at 11:00 am at Louisa United Methodist Church (LUMC), 100 East Main Street, Louisa, followed by a reception. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 11 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at LUMC, 100 East Main Street, Louisa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Brenda’s memory to Louisa Little League, PO Box 2182, Louisa, VA 23093.
